Profiles in Success: Hemanth Athiraman, MD

Discover an MD program graduate’s international journey to medical practice in the United States.

At Saba University School of Medicine, we are proud to help international students achieve their goals of becoming practicing physicians in the U.S. and Canada.

We do this by delivering an accredited Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, wherein future medical doctors receive comprehensive instruction, early hands-on training, extensive support from dedicated faculty and the opportunity to undertake clinical rotations in North America.

Today, we are pleased to highlight the educational journey and career success of Hemanth Athiraman, MD,a SUSOM graduate who has worked as a practicing hospitalist and who is now expanding his medical expertise in the radiation oncology residency program at Vanderbilt University.

We thank Dr. Athiraman for sharing his experiences and providing guidance for the next generation of physicians!

What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine, and as an international student, how did you first hear about Saba University School of Medicine?

“My journey into medicine has always been grounded in both science and service. I completed a PhD in Medical Physics prior to medical school, focusing on imaging, radiation physics and translational research. While I valued the scientific rigor of research, I felt a strong desire to be directly involved in patient care and clinical decision-making. That calling ultimately led me to pursue an MD program.

As an international student exploring pathways to practice medicine in the United States, I carefully researched institutions known for academic rigor and successful U.S. residency placement. Through independent research, I learned about Saba University School of Medicine, and I was drawn to its focused curriculum and reputation for preparing students to compete successfully in the U.S. system.”

What ultimately led you to choose SUSOM for your medical education?

“Saba stood out to me because of its academic intensity, structured curriculum and emphasis on accountability. I was looking for a program that demanded discipline and mastery of the fundamentals. Saba’s focused learning environment and strong USMLE preparation aligned perfectly with my long-term goals.

Coming from a background in engineering and medical physics, I wanted a medical education that would allow me to integrate scientific thinking with clinical medicine. Saba provided that rigorous foundation, while also fostering independence and resilience, qualities that are essential for long-term success in medicine.”

How did your experience at SUSOM prepare you for your residency training and medical career?

“Saba built the clinical reasoning framework that carried me through every stage of my career. After graduating, I matched into a family medicine residency, where I later served as Chief Resident. The work ethic, discipline and depth of understanding developed at Saba translated directly into success during residency.

Following residency, I practiced as a hospitalist, managing high-acuity inpatients across ICU, telemetry and medical-surgical units. I also held hospital leadership roles that required systems-based thinking, quality improvement oversight, multidisciplinary collaboration and accountability in complex clinical environments. These experiences strengthened my clinical judgment and deepened my understanding of healthcare delivery at both the bedside and systems level.

Most significantly, after completing family medicine residency and practicing as a hospitalist physician, I successfully matched into the radiation oncology residency program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Transitioning into a highly competitive specialty, particularly as an international graduate, required academic depth, research experience, resilience and long-term strategic vision. The rigorous foundation I developed at Saba played an important role in positioning me for that opportunity.”

How has your education at SUSOM influenced your approach to patient care and your work today?

“My education at Saba instilled independence, accountability and adaptability. As a hospitalist, I learned to manage complexity at the bedside and navigate systems-level challenges. Now, as a radiation oncology resident at Vanderbilt, I will be integrating my clinical training with my PhD background in medical physics, bringing together patient-centered care and advanced oncologic science.

Radiation oncology is one of the most academically demanding and competitive specialties in medicine. Successfully transitioning from family medicine and hospitalist practice into this field reflects not only personal determination but also the strength of the medical education that prepared me to compete at that level.

Saba reinforced the importance of lifelong learning and disciplined preparation, principles that continue to guide my work today.”

What advice would you give to other international students considering SUSOM for their medical education?

“From Chemical Engineering, to an MS in Engineering Physics, to a PhD in Medical Physics, then family medicine residency, hospitalist practice with leadership responsibilities and now radiation oncology residency at Vanderbilt, each step of my journey has built upon the previous one. My path has been long, nonlinear and deeply intentional.

For international students, especially, understand that your pathway may require additional perseverance, but it is absolutely achievable. Saba will give you the academic foundation you need to succeed as a future medical doctor. Your success will then depend on discipline, resilience and long-term vision.

If you commit to excellence and remain adaptable, there are no limits to what you can achieve.”
