Background:

As a biochemistry undergraduate at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, Ryan saw first hand the overwhelmingly destructive power of fires. Revering the work of the firefighters in southern California, he decided post-college to work as an EMT in a hospital emergency room and serve as a liaison between firefighters and doctors. 

While there he instead found himself enthralled with the work of the emergency medicine doctors, saying "they blew me away, and were  truly the smartest people I had ever met." Pivoting toward medicine full-time, he went on to get two post-bacc degrees, one in health care administration and one in biomedical sciences before coming to Saba for his medical degree.

"The professors at Saba were stellar, and life on the island was an adventure. We were so well prepared for our clerkships that we were a few steps ahead of the students from other schools in our rotations."

After Graduating from Saba:

Ryan matched after graduation into an emergency medicine residency at Sinai Grace Hospital in Detroit. Named Chief Resident in his final year, he ran the intern training sessions and discovered a passion for teaching. He went on to get involved in medical education, joining Prisma Health as an Assistant Clerkship Director at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. "I had the chance to create an Emergency Medicine curriculum for 4th year medical students. I also still work clinically, with 10-14 shifts a month in the emergency room, along with my clerkship duties."

He reflects fondly upon his time at Saba, sharing  "Saba prepared me extremely well and I have succeeded. Saba has the resources to allow you to succeed, and the opportunity is there for all if you are willing to work for it."
