Why Getting an MD is More Challenging Than Ever

Natalie Wietfeldt, RLRA paper published in International Journal of Medical Students

Congratulations to Saba student Natalie Wietfeldt, who had her RLRA published in the International Journal of Medical Students.

Natalie Wietfeldt

Congratulations to Saba student Natalie Wietfeldt, who recently had her Research: Literature and Review Analysis paper (RLRA) published in the prestigious International Journal of Medical Students! Her paper is titled “FKBP5 Gene Variants as Predictors for Antidepressant Response in Individuals with Major Depressive Disorder Who Have Experienced Childhood Trauma. A Systematic Review”. In summarizing her paper Natalie writes, “Antidepressants used to treat Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) have historically varied in efficacy for different individuals. In an effort to improve the selection of an effective treatment, antidepressant pharmacotherapy has become one of the first ventures into pharmacogenetics, a field that aims to identify ideal therapies based on the patient’s genetic data. This review examines the gene FKBP5, a regulator in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and its association with antidepressant response. I chose this topic because of my interest in genetics and its potential use for targeting pharmaceutical therapies. I’m interested in studying if and how medicine can be “personalized” based on genetics. Psychiatry is one area that may benefit from the study of medication effectiveness in certain populations.”
