Karen Soika always expected to become a doctor, but first pursued a successful career in business. When her dream of becoming a physician resurfaced, she turned to Saba University School of Medicine. Today, Karen is a successful cosmetic surgeon in Greenwich, CT and trains doctors all over the world.
The daughter of a physician and a nurse, Karen always planned to follow the same career path and was accepted to medical school right out of college. But all of that took place as she was recovering from the unexpected loss of her father. “It wasn’t the right time for me,” she now says. Instead, she decided to “live and travel” and pursued a very successful career in pharmaceutical marketing.
Her interest in health and medicine was never truly quieted. Along the way, she earned a Master’s Degree from New York University in Endocrine Physiology with a Minor in Biochemistry. In her 30’s, she decided the time had come to revive her original dream. Having heard about several Caribbean medical schools through her work with pharmaceutical companies, she began her research in earnest for the next chapter of her life.
Saba appealed to her, not only because of its great reputation but also the small class size. ”I didn’t want to go to a mill” she said, reacting to the very large class sizes that are found at some schools. After Saba, Karen went on to do postgraduate work in General Surgery: an Internship at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York and residency at George Washington University in Washington, DC.
In her private practice, Karen is focused on Cosmetic Surgery, Acne management and Aesthetic Medicine. She was recruited by the nation’s largest Continuing Medical Education company that specializes in courses in cosmetic procedures including Liposuction, Facelifts, Breast Implants, Neck lifts, Blepharoplasty as well as nonsurgical or minimally invasive techniques and procedures such as Dermal Fillers and Botox. She has trained over 3000 doctors world wide.
Karen was active at Saba and was class president one year. “I had nothing but great experiences at Saba,” she said. “I feel that I made the best decision. To this day I talk about Saba. It was the best period of my personal and professional life!”
