Island Hopping to a Career in Healthcare

From Hawaii to Saba, when it comes to his medical education Nicolas Gioffre gets it done on islands—the more beautiful the better.

In 2006, he received a BS from the University of Hawaii, launching a career in nursing that eventually took him to a position at Scripps Green Hospital in San Diego. While there he became friendly with one of the first physicians on the hospital’s staff to have attended an international medical school. That school was Saba and soon Nic was following in his footsteps. He received his medical degree from Saba this year.

Nic was a stand-out student at Saba, earning a USMLE Step 1 score of 252 and graduating in the Alpha Omega Phi Honor & Service Society (academic excellence and community volunteerism). His advice to others looking at Saba and hoping for his academic success? “Follow the program and you will get good results. The professors do a great job of keeping track of students, so all the support you need is there for you.”

Because Saba is one of the few international medical schools specifically approved for clinicals and residencies in California, Nic ranked Scripps #1 in his match, and was welcomed back to practice internal medicine in a three-year residency.

His dream is to stay at Scripps as a hospitalist and teach. “I love med students.”
