Background:

Born and raised in Montreal of Haitian origin, Dr. Farla Jean-Louis Volcy graduated from the University of Ottawa with a BScN in Nursing. After working several years as a registered nurse, she went on to pursue her master’s degree in the Family Nurse Practitioner program to eventually become the first family nurse practitioner in Laval, the largest suburb of Montreal. “After a while, I realized that I was particularly interested in a more in-depth understanding of the pathophysiology of diseases and knew that I needed to further my studies to become a physician. I decided to take some additional science courses and then applied to Saba for my medical degree”. She transitioned seamlessly into medical school, making the Dean’s List for multiple semesters. “The professors on Saba were knowledgeable and professional. They provided so much detail on every subject. It was rigorous, expectations were high, and I was grateful for that. When it came time for clinicals, my clinical coordinator was amazing and I was able to rotate in Canada and the U.S. It was an easygoing process”.

After Graduating from Saba:

Farla pre-matched for residency in Internal Medicine at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where she had done one of her rotations as a medical student. “I had an incredible experience at Brookdale and the attendings that I worked with expected me to perform at my highest potential which I am so grateful for”. She was named Internal Medicine Resident of the Year in her first year and actively worked to reinforce the relationship between the nursing staff, and the internal medicine department through regular meetings. “My goal was to discuss topics that were geared toward improving patient safety and medical standards of care”. Currently, at Maimonides Medical Center in a cardiology fellowship, Farla sees a variety of very sick patients. “I have the opportunity to medically manage very sick patients with complex cardiovascular diseases such as severe valvular heart disease, acute decompensated heart failure in cardiogenic shock, acute myocardial infarction, and also perform and assist in surgical procedures such as right and left cardiac catheterization, swan placement, atrial septal defect repair, transvenous pacemaker placement, etc. I am so thankful for this journey which would have been impossible without the support and guidance of my family, friends, and mentors”.
