Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Specialist Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Newton, MA

Elliott Martin was teaching the classics at UCLA when he decided that instead of a career lecturing and writing about life’s big questions, he wanted to help people grapple with them. So he set about earning his medical degree, graduating from Saba in May 2009, completing his residency in general psychiatry at Yale-New Haven Hospital, followed by a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

Today, Dr. Martin is on staff at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Massachusetts, board-certified in both general psychiatry and child/adolescent psychiatry with a faculty appointment at Tufts University School of Medicine and a private practice.

“I was very happy teaching undergraduates about the classical worlds of Greece, Rome and the ancient Near East and creating a career in academia,” said Martin, who has a B.A. in Biology from Columbia University, a B.A. in History from the University of Washington in Seattle and an M.A. in Near Eastern Languages & Cultures from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he later went on to teach. “But I envisioned a different life for myself and I saw it in psychiatry.”

Looking for a medical school that combined a strong commitment to academic excellence and was also open to a student making a late-in-life career change, Saba rose to the top of the list.
