Jose Joaquin Hernandez, MD graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine where he also finished his General Surgery residency.  He then practiced in Manila while also teaching Anatomy (particularly Histology). 

Dr. Hernandez has ECFMG certification and completed several clinical fellowships and specializations namely:  

  • Surgical Intensive Care at the Medical College of Wisconsin, WI
  • Cardiovascular Surgery at Texas Heart Institute, TX
  • Pulmonary and Foregut Surgery at University of Southern California, CA
  • Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the University of California San Francisco, CA

He also served as Clinical Instructor during his stints in both California institutions. 

He is a Diplomate and Fellow of the Philippine College of Surgeons as well as the Philippine Association of Thoracic, Cardiac, and Vascular Surgery.  He practiced his specialties and trained general surgery residents in the southern Philippines where it was needed for the past 15 years prior to moving to Saba. He even performed the first open heart surgery in his region as well as other procedures that were not available before he arrived in the area.
