In Medical School First Year: Women Now Outnumber Men

Although medicine has historically been a male profession, that's been gradually changing since the 1970s.

In 1969, female physicians numbered less than one in ten. Today, it's over a third. And in 2017, for the first time, women outnumbered men in incoming medical school classes. According to a 2017 report on applicants, matriculants, and enrollment by the Association of American Medical Colleges, women made up 50.7% of first-year medical students compared with 49.8% in 2016. Viewed over two years, the number of women entering medical school rose by 9.6%.
