When COVID-19 hit, a Saba graduate’s experience
During the initial days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Saba graduate, Shane Drahos actively supported medical units at Florida VA Medical Center.
After completing a Stanford University Sleep Medicine Fellowship, Saba graduate Shane Drahos went to work at the Orlando, Florida VA Medical Center in their Sleep Medicine department. “ Both my grandparents served in World War 2, and I saw the sacrifice they made not only during military service but afterwards once they returned home.”
Shane shares what happened at the hospital in March 2020 when Covid-19 hit. “My whole world was swept upside down. I met with the Chief of Medicine and volunteered my services to help out, and from then on I have been working full time in the Emergency Department helping with our pandemic response.” He goes on to share that he contracted Covid-19 himself, not surprising considering his daily caseload of roughly 20-25 patients per day, some of which were COVID positive. Shaking off some residual fatigue, he calls it a “trying time for humanity” but is proud of the work that he and his colleagues have been doing. As he begins to slowly spend some more time back in the Sleep Medicine Department, he anticipates he will eventually be splitting time between the ER and Sleep Medicine areas of the hospital. “I’m still really passionate about sleep medicine, and helping out the vets with their sleep issues. It is so incredibly rewarding for me.”
