Saba “Dean of Sciences” award recipient, Keyur Patel

Keyur Patel was recently awarded the Saba Dean of Sciences Award, reflecting the highest cummulative GPA.

Keyur Patel did his undergraduate work at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, and chose Saba based on word of mouth. Says Keyur, “Canadian Saba grads have good things to say about Saba. They talk about the rigor of the academics, and so I was prepared for that when I arrived. The island itself is beautiful and ideal for what we are there to do…which is to study”.

Keyur Patel was recently awarded the Saba “Dean of Sciences” Award, reflecting the highest cumulative GPA.

He shares the following three points for those following behind him to be successful in their basic science work:

  • “Make sure that you make good friends. The friends that you pick have a huge impact on your island experience, and can be helpful with academics. They take you far.”
  • “Have humility. I told myself maybe I don’t know as much as I think I do, even while doing well. Be open to learning everything. The ego can act as a barrier. It is important that you don’t fall into the trap of thinking you know everything and not learning the concepts thoroughly.”
  • “Help others. I was a teaching assistant every semester I could be, which also gave me the opportunity to refresh what I had learned the previous semester.”
