CNN Interviews Saba Grad About Rare Disease
Saba graduate, Dr. Mickey Bansal interviewed about Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM), live on CNN.
A paralyzing neurological condition for which there is no known cure or cause—Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM)—is getting increasing attention. Dr. Mickey Bansal, a Saba grad who is Medical Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Coliseum Medical Centers and Coliseum Northside Hospital in Macon, GA appeared on CNN to discuss the growing concerns over outbreaks of this rare, polio-like disease especially among children. The CDC has confirmed over 100 cases of AFM, including the death of a child in Washington state, which led to Dr. Bansal’s appearance on CNN’s HLN network with Michaela Pereira. Dr. Bansal regularly assesses patients for symptoms such as the ones displayed in AFM and in the interview he offered a number of suggestions to concerned parents. Among them—ensuring that their children are fully vaccinated, including for polio. A leading candidate for the cause of AFM is Enterovirus 68 which is related to polio.
