Hyperbaric Medicine

Saba University offers students the opportunity to participate in our Hyperbaric Medicine program--either to receive elective credit or a Masters Degree.

Hyperbaric medicine—also known as Hyperbaric oxygen therapy—is a medical treatment administered by delivering 100 percent oxygen at high pressures in an enclosed chamber. Best known for treating divers suffering from decompression sickness, Hyperbaric medicine has also proven effective as adjunctive therapy for conditions such as carbon monoxide poisoning and problem wounds.

Because the island of Saba is a major diving location, Saba University has long had a Hyperbaric Medicine program. Because many hospitals and medical centers offer Hyperbaric treatment, students find it is a valuable skill to acquire.

The Hyperbaric Medicine Program includes three courses:

  • MDH 555 Hyperbaric Medicine I
  • MDH 556 Hyperbaric Medicine II
  • MDH 557 Hyperbaric Medicine III

Students completing all three courses are awarded a Certificate in Hyperbaric Medicine. Two credits are given for each course. With the addition of a research project, students may obtain an M.S. in Hyperbaric Medicine.
