Basic Sciences At a Glance

Saba University offers a traditional curriculum in the Basic Sciences that also provides opportunities for early exposure to clinical applications:

First Semester: In the first semester at Saba University, you will start with the fundamentals: Cellular Biology, Embryology, Histology and that quintessential right of passage for every medical student—Gross Anatomy with human cadavers.

Second Semester: In the second semester, you will move on to the body’s molecular building blocks in Biochemistry and Medical Genetics.  You will also learn about the complex internal and external relationships affecting human health, including the interplay among the body’s different systems (Physiology) and the connections to our environment (Epdiemiology).

Third Semester: In the third semester, you will start to learn about what makes us unhealthy, including infectious diseases (Microbiology).  Your understanding of what makes us human will be enhanced with studies in Neuroscience and Medical Psychology and you will get an opportunity to tackle important moral and ethical challenges in Medical and Legal Ethics.

Fourth Semester: In the fourth semester, you will build on your knowledge of the path of disease, exploring its impact on the body’s systems (Pathology) as well as therapeutic efforts to deal with it (Pharmacology). You will also continue to develop your clinical skills with the fourth course in the Doctor/Patient Relationship series—great preparation for the clinical clerkships in the U.S. and Canada that will be starting soon.

Fifth Semester: In the fifth semester, you will expand on your knowledge of disease in Clinical Pathology, continue developing your skills in physical diagnosis and prepare extensively for the USMLE Step 1 Exam.
