PRE-CLINICAL MEDICINE PROGRAM
CLEARANCE FROM SABA
Students completing the basic sciences or concluding studies for any reason must first obtain a financial clearance letter from the school's administration office. Without this form, it will not be possible to purchase a ticket from Saba to St. Maarten. The form needs to be presented to the Immigration Officer at the Airport before a student is permitted to board a flight. Clearance signatures are required from the student's landlord, major utility company, Satel N.V., and the local Telephone Company where a student may have acquired debts. This is done to insure that no student leaves with financial arrears on the island. Transcripts may be withheld for students who do not pay expenses encountered while in residence on Saba.

Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the basic sciences and be recommended by the Pre-Clinical Medicine faculty to enter the clinical medicine portion of the curriculum. Entry requirements for clerkships include:

  • Application for Professional Liability Insurance
  • Completed Current Immunization Form
  • Participation in a Clinical Orientation Session
  • A Personal Interview with Office of Clinical Medicine Staff
  • Signed Clinical Contract
  • Completed Clinical Preference Questionnaire
  • A Neatly Typed Curriculum Vitae
CLINICAL PLACEMENT

Geographical mobility is required of all students in the clinical medicine program. Students are given an opportunity to fill out a geographical preference form prior to entering the clinical medicine program. Special
consideration is given to engaged, married students, and students with school age children.

  1. Clinical rotations are scheduled through the SABA University Office of Clinical Medicine. Students are not permitted to contact affiliated hospitals directly until official assignment to the site is received via a clerkship confirmation form. Special arrangements for electives or other rotations should be first cleared through the Office of Clinical Medicine, which will provide proof of insurance and liaison contacts with the hospital or preceptor.

  2. Students will be required to complete an oral or objective examination at the end of each core clinical rotation. This score will be averaged with the overall score of performance given by the preceptor. An overall score of 75% is required to pass each clinical rotation. Written examinations are not required in elective rotations.

  3. The highest standards of conduct and performance are expected of SABA University students. One hundred percent attendance is required for all rotations. Clinical students with excessive absences, whether excused or unexcused, may fail a rotation. Violation of hospital rules or a pattern of inappropriate or unprofessional behavior will result in immediate disciplinary review and may result in suspension or dismissal from the Clinical Medicine Program.

  4. Students are expected to take the USMLE Step I examination within 3-4 months of completing the Basic Science Program. Students are permitted to begin rotations directly after taking the USMLE Step I. Students who fail Step I will be required to take a leave of absence to re-take the exam. Failure of the USMLE Step I will generate automatic review by the Promotions Committee.

  5. If a student achieves a GPA of less than 2.0 at any time during their course of study in the SUSOM program, the individual may be placed on Academic Probation or involuntarily dismissed from the program.

  6. If a student achieves a grade of "F" in any one course during a semester, the student will be placed on Academic Probation and must repeat that course during the next possible semester. This student may not withdraw from the failed course for academic or disciplinary reasons. Failure to complete the failed course may result in dismissal from the medical school.

  7. Any student who has been placed on Academic Probation may not be permitted to register for an overload (i.e., more than three courses) during the time the student is on academic probation or during any future semester. If a student fails two courses in one semester, they will be required to repeat those courses and may not register for any other courses in that semester. The Promotions Committee may elect to terminate the student who fails two courses in the same semester.

  8. If a student passes a course that has been repeated, the Promotions Committee may remove the student from academic probation, depending upon the student's overall GPA.

  9. If a student receives a failing grade in a repeated course, the student may be dismissed from medical school.
LEAVE OF ABSENCE

Requests for a Leave of Absence may be granted for medical, personal, financial or academic reasons. Emergency leaves for a short period of time may be granted in cases of a serious illness or death in the family within 24 hours of written notification by the Dean of Basic Sciences or Dean of Clinical Medicine. Students are required to give advanced written notification and must assume responsibility to complete course or clinical rotation requirements upon returning. Time missed during basic science studies will be counted as part of the 90% class attendance requirement. The maximum time granted for a Leave of Absence in the Basic Sciences is one academic semester (16 weeks). For students who are receiving financial aid through TERI, notification will be submitted for an approved Leave of Absence. Students who neglect to return to the program at the end of the leave of absence or who neglect to apply for an extension are subject to administrative withdrawal from SABA University.

Clinical medicine students who wish to take more than 30 days off during their third and fourth year clerkships must request written permission in advance to the Dean of Clinical Medicine. Students must specify dates and the reason for the request. Students who fail to request a leave of absence may be subject to immediate administrative withdrawal. The Office of Clinical Medicine, the preceptor and the hospital's Office of Medical Education, must be notified immediately if a student has an emergency requiring absence from a rotation. All time missed during a rotation must be made up to the satisfaction of the hospital Director of Medical Education or the preceptor.
