GRADUATE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
MSH 301 Hyperbaric Medicine I

The first course in hyperbaric medicine would consist primarily of a series of lectures covering the following topics (one or more lectures to cover each topic):

  • Introduction and history of hyperbaric medicine
  • Gas Laws and relevance to hyperbaric medicine
  • History of diving and development of underwater breathing apparatus
  • Indications and contraindications for hyperbaric treatment
  • Diving physiology
  • Inert gas narcosis
  • Barotrauma
  • Decompression sickness
  • Arterial gas embolism
  • Oxygen toxicity
  • Shallow water blackout
  • Treatment of diving-related illnesses and syndromes (procedures and protocols)
 
MSH 302 Hyperbaric Medicine II

The second course in the hyperbaric medicine sequence would include some limited didactic lecture sessions in combination with student seminars and presentations. Topics would include:

  • The physiological basis for hyperbaric oxygen treatment of non-diving illness
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Soft tissue infections
  • Crush injury/compartment syndrome
  • Diabetic ulcer
  • Gas gangrene
  • Thermal burns
  • Intracranial abscess
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Radionecrosis
  • Compromised skin flap
 
MSH 303 Hyperbaric Medicine III

The third and final course in the hyperbaric medicine series would consist entirely of student presentations and symposia. Students would be involved in planning and carrying out projects including written and oral presentations as well as actual research with one or more of the hyperbaric medicine faculty. Topics for presentations and symposia would include:

  • Critical appraisal of peer-reviewed articles pertaining to recent developments and research in hyperbaric treatment.
  • Evaluation of the role and validity of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the large number of illnesses and syndromes currently under investigation as possible candidates for hyperbaric oxygen therapy (e.g. myocardial infarction, stroke, plastic surgery, athletic injuries, cerebral palsy).
  • Improvements in protocols for hyperbaric treatment.
  • Description, location, treatment and research emphases of hyperbaric programs currently operating in the United States and Canada. Included will be contact information to assist the students in accessing these programs. The information can be compiled and presented for discussion as a comprehensive handout.
